Thyroid Ultrasound Q&A
What is a thyroid ultrasound?
A thyroid ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses soundwaves to take detailed images of your thyroid and surrounding soft tissues. It’s painless and noninvasive, but incredibly effective at detecting thyroid-related health problems.
Why would I need a thyroid ultrasound?
At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., we use thyroid ultrasound to address several concerns, including:
- An abnormal thyroid function test
- An underactive thyroid gland
- An overactive thyroid gland
- A swollen thyroid
- A painful thyroid
What is the process for receiving a thyroid ultrasound?
At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., we conduct ultrasounds on-site as an outpatient procedure. Once you arrive, you remove your shirt and lie down on your back. Your technologist may inject a series of contrast agents into your bloodstream to improve the quality of your ultrasound images.
Your technologist then gently applies a warm, water-based gel to your throat and glides the ultrasound probe (transducer) over your skin. The transducer emits soundwaves that bounce off your thyroid and surrounding tissues. The soundwaves create detailed images that your physician will use to help create a treatment plan.
A thyroid ultrasound doesn’t use any radiation. As soon as your appointment is over, you can get dressed and return to normal activities right away.
When will I receive the results of my thyroid ultrasound?
Following your thyroid ultrasound, a radiologist reviews your results and submits a report to your primary care physician if it was a diagnostic study. If the study was a screening scan, then the report will go directly to you via mail or pick up.
