Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound Q&A
What is a Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound?
A Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound is a simple, imaging tool that uses sound waves, also known as sonography, that pass harmlessly through your body and bounce back to create an image. The ultrasound is done trans-vaginally to get the best look at the uterus and ovaries. It’s also worth noting that this technology doesn’t use any radiation, as is the case with X-ray imaging.
The bloodwork taken at the beginning of each fertility monitoring appointment is used to test your blood levels for Estradiol, Progesterone, and LH. Additional labs may be taken if necessary. Your Fertility Treatment Physician will discuss the most accurate times and dates with you to have the labs.
Why would I need a Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound?
During the ultrasound, the sonographer will determine the number and size of each follicle along with the endometrial thickness and type. After running your labs, your referring physician will examine your lab values and ultrasound results and determine if your follicles and lining are developing appropriately or if adjustments need to be made. As medications are introduced to your system by your referring physician, your follicles should begin to grow and your estrogen levels should rise, thus providing evidence that the follicles are maturing appropriately.
A baseline appointment can be viewed as a patient’s very FIRST “Fertility Monitoring” appointment that quite literally establishes blood hormone, lining, and follicular baseline levels on day 2, 3, or 4 of your menstrual cycle. For Anovulatory Patients (or those with otherwise absent/infrequent cycles), a baseline can be established at any point in time.
Afterward, the number of monitoring appointments that you’ll need varies greatly depending on both the type of treatment you are having (timed intercourse, IUI, IVF with fresh transfer, or IVF with a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), along with the type and dosage of medication you are taking.
Monitoring appointments usually begin on day 2, 3, or 4 of your menstrual cycle and subsequently occur every 2-4 days. As you progress from the beginning of a treatment cycle, you can expect monitoring appointments to be more frequent as it becomes increasingly important to keep a close eye on the follicles, eggs, and uterine lining in order to appropriately time the planned fertility treatment procedure.
What do I need to do to prepare for a Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound?
There’s little you need to do to prepare for your Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound. When you arrive, you will lie down on our exam table and your technologist will utilize a transvaginal transducer to generate images of your ovarian follicles. .
When do I get results from my Fertility Monitoring Ultrasound?
Once your test is over, your ultrasound technologist sends the information to our radiologist for interpretation, and your results are sent to your ordering physician. The results of this procedure are typically available to your physician within 24 hours or less after your appointment.
