Breast Ultrasound Q&A
What is a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound is a quick and painless diagnostic imaging procedure that uses soundwaves to create 2D images of your breasts and surrounding soft tissue.
Why would I need a breast ultrasound?
At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound Inc., we perform breast ultrasounds to gain insight into the following areas/concerns:
- To diagnose breast abnormalities
- To detect cancerous tumors or cysts
- To supplement traditional breast cancer screening
Many breast lesions and abnormalities are difficult to detect via traditional mammograms. Breasts are dense and have many glandular tissues. Ultrasound provides detailed images from various angles, allowing for a more thorough inspection and accurate diagnosis.
What is the process for receiving a breast ultrasound?
At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound Inc., we conduct breast ultrasounds on-site in our welcoming facility.
Prior to your breast ultrasound, you will lie down on your back on an exam table. Your technologist might also ask you to raise one or both arms over your head.
Once you’re in position, your technologist gently applies a warm, water-based gel to one or both breasts and your surrounding skin. The gel helps the transducer move smoothly and make secure contact with your body.
After applying the gel, your technologist gently moves the transducer from side to side. The transducer emits soundwaves that bounce off the tissues in your body. The transducer converts this feedback into digital images of your breast tissue.
How long does a breast ultrasound take?
A breast ultrasound usually takes 20-30 minutes. During your appointment, follow your Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc. technologist’s instructions carefully. To get high-quality images, it may be necessary to change position several times and remain still.
When will I receive the results of my breast ultrasound?
Following your breast ultrasound, we give your results to the radiologist. The radiologist reviews the images taken during your appointment and sends a comprehensive report to your primary care physician if it was a diagnostic study. If the study was a screening scan, then the report will go directly to you via mail or pick up.
