Abdominal Ultrasound Q&A
What is an abdominal ultrasound?
An abdominal ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses soundwaves to take 2D pictures of your pancreas, spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, and liver. It can also provide information on the health and function of the blood vessels in and around your abdomen.
How do I prepare for an abdominal ultrasound?
Preparing for an abdominal ultrasound is different for each patient. Overnight fasting and morning appointments are generally a standard practice. Call our office before your appointment and you’ll receive specific instructions on how to prepare for your abdominal ultrasound. Make sure to follow your technologist’s instructions carefully to achieve the most accurate and timely results and to help avoid the need for a return appointment.
What is the process for receiving an abdominal ultrasound?
At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., we conduct abdominal ultrasounds on-site as an outpatient procedure. Next, your technologist carefully applies a warm, water-based gel to the skin of your stomach. The gel lubricates the transducer, making it easy for your technologist to take pictures of your internal organs.
After applying the gel, your technologist moves the transducer back and forth and up and down. The transducer emits soundwaves that bounce off your internal organs. The transducer catches the waves and converts them into 2D images that display in real-time on a computer monitor.
How long does an abdominal ultrasound take?
The length of an abdominal ultrasound depends on the issues being addressed. Most people are in and out of the office within 40-60 minutes. There’s no recovery period or downtime. As soon as you’re finished, you can return to work or other routine activities right away.
When will I receive the results of my abdominal ultrasound?
Following your abdominal ultrasound, we give your results to the radiologist. The radiologist reviews the images taken during your appointment and sends a comprehensive report to your primary care physician if it was a diagnostic study. If the study was a screening scan then the report will go directly to you via mail or pick up.
